Here’s a group shot of the veterans, American Legion Post 31 members and Heroes on the Water volunteers before they headed out for a fun day on the water.

More than 20 veterans from around the area had an opportunity to kayak and fish on Cavanaugh Lake Sunday, June 8, during the Heroes on the Water event held at the American Legion Post 31 in Sylvan Township.

For some, it was their first time in a kayak and volunteers made sure they wore the proper life vests, were given thorough instructions, and had all of their questions answered before they headed out with experts on the water.

For one female veteran, it was a special day. She was celebrating her birthday at the Legion and quickly got the hang of paddling the kayak. For others, the experience was something they’d had before, and were looking forward to having again.

“I like the fact that we were able to hold this event for wounded veterans,” said newly elected Commander of Post 31 Howard Flintoft.

This was the fourth time that the Sylvan Township post hosted a Heroes on the Water event, which is one of many held across the state. After breakfast, the veterans headed out onto the lake and when they returned, they were greeted with a cookout for lunch.

And although the day began on a rainy note, by the time the veterans took to the lake, the sun was shining and their smiles were reflected off the water as they headed out for a carefree day of fun and new-found friendships.
