The Global Marketplace will welcome monks from Gaden Shartse Dokhang Monastery in Tibet on Thursday, Aug. 14 during the final Sounds and Sights on Thursday Nights of the 2014 season.
The monks are in the area for their year-long US based Compassion Tour to share their culture, arts and wisdom, as well as practices for developing inner peace and compassion. Funds raised on this tour will be used to build a prayer hall and dormitories, as well as provide for the medical needs of the monks of Gaden Shartse Dokhang Monastery.
“We at the Global Marketplace are thrilled that they will be available for the final Sounds and Sights on Thursday Nights in Chelsea,” says Kevin Frahm, owner of Global Marketplace. “We invite everyone to stop by to hear a demonstration of their chanting, singing bowl meditations and to meet and interact with these men.”
The monks are expected to share their culture, teachings, and arts in varied ways – including dharma talks, stage performances, a discussion of creating of sand mandalas, group healing rituals and empowerments, and blessings.
Gaden Shartse Dokhang Monastery is one of the three leading monasteries and Tibetan educational institutions. This monastery is part of the famed monastic University of Gaden, which was founded in 1409 by the great Tibetan master Jey Tsongkhapa.
Dokhang is one of the eleven houses that make up Gaden Shartse Monastery and has historically been known as the “right hand” of Gaden Monastery.
The monks will be available to introduce Geshe Tenzin and give the details of the Monastery, and a brief description of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism. Discussion topics as part of a question and answer session will include: Meditations on Patience and Compassion, The Four Noble Truths, and World Peace and the Unity of all Religions.
The monks will also have singing bowls and other Tibetan cultural items for purchase.
The Global Marketplace has also invited local chalk artists to stop by and create their own mandalas on the sidewalk and back patio.
