Five young men from Troop 476 of Chelsea received their Eagle Scout pin during a Court of Honor held Dec. 29, 2013 at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds.

To earn the Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank in scouting, a scout must: progress through six ranks; earn at least 21 merit badges (13 of which are required for Eagle); and serve at least six months in a troop leadership position.

Finally, the scout must plan, develop, and implement a service project for any religious, school, or community group. During the project, he must raise the project funds himself and also solicit and supervise the project volunteers. Only about 4 percent of all scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Brendan Oswald designed and built an orienteering course at the Waterloo State Recreational Area.

Joel Myers built two shelving units for, and refurbished and reorganized, a storage unit for Immanuel Bible Church of Chelsea.

Patrick Dailey designed, built, and installed four benches for the Chelsea Oak Grove Cemetery.

Connor Dailey designed and built a paved seating area, with benches, in front of the Chelsea First United Methodist Church.

Shane McGrath reorganized the Chelsea Self-Storage unit used by Ballet Chelsea by designing, constructing, and installing a large shelving unit.

Oswald is a junior at Eastern Michigan University studying Life Sciences. Myers is a freshman at Western Michigan University studying Music Composition. Patrick Dailey is a freshman at Eastern Michigan University studying Simulation, Animation, and Gaming. Connor Dailey is a freshman at Grand Valley State University studying International Relations and National Security. McGrath is a freshman at Michigan Technological University studying Mechanical Engineering.

The total number of Eagles Scouts from Troop 476, which chartered in 1957, now stands at 65.

Troop 476’s charter organization is the Chelsea Kiwanis Club.

The troop meets Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds.
