Chelsea Kiwanis Club hears from Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Council; nut sale underway

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Last Monday the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Meghann Hallowell, Fund Development Specialist, and Lyah Van Sickle, Fun Development Manager, with Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.

They updated us on the latest goings on in the Heart of Michigan council. In 2008, five councils merged to form Heart of Michigan council, which includes 34 Michigan counties in the southwest, central, and northeast lower Michigan. 18,000 girls and 6000 adults make up the organization. They are part of 1.3 million Girl Scouts in the country. Locally, Chelsea has 108 girls and 50 adults, Dexter has 180 girls and 82 adults.

The Girl Scout mission is to build courage, confidence, and character in the scouts as they work with each other serving their communities. Their mission aligns perfectly with ours, as we continue to support them each year. Some of the council’s projects include working at food banks, making masks, flags for veterans, and working in community gardens.

The highest award in girl scouts is the Gold Award. To receive, a girl must plan a project to improve her community, gather the necessary supplies needed, enlist help from other scouts and community members, schedule tasks to complete the project, and see it through to its conclusion.

Some interesting facts:

  • 50% of female business leaders were girl scouts
  • 80% of female tech leaders were girl scouts
  • 76% of female U.S. senators were girl scouts
  • 100% of U.S. Secretaries of State were Girl Scouts

Lyah encourages everyone to ask questions of the Girl Scouts you see selling cookies. Ask about the badges on their uniforms or how the profits from their sales will be used. The cookie sale helps girls learn about planning, people skills, and money management.

The club’s Second Annual Mixed Nut and Chocolate Sale continues.  Product is due to arrive at the end of October. To order, see any Kiwanian, scan the QR code on our flyer that takes you to our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/kiwanisclubofchelsea.

Monday, club members will have a monthly board meeting with a discussion of budgeting for the 2020-21 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, considering the absence of our major fund raiser this summer due to the coronavirus.

Normally, Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.
