The Class of 2019 boasts the largest number of students honored with cum laude status in the history of the Chelsea School District.

Of 232 students graduating, 104 students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement at the 46th annual Cum Laude Honors Banquet on May 15 at Chelsea High School (CHS).

The strolling meal, consisting of hors d’oeuvres, sandwiches, salads, small bites, and impressive desserts, was co-hosted by CHS administration and the Chelsea Area Women’s Service Club.

Students are invited to the banquet if they have earned an unweighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.667 over the course of their high school careers. Each student may request a district teacher, employee, or coach – current or retired – to attend the event with them and their parents as their honored educator.

CHS Principal Mike Kapolka, with help from Assistant Principal Luman Strong, presented the awards in the auditorium following the meal.

Designated distinctions based on GPAs are as follows: 3.667-3.777 — Cum Laude, 3.778-3.888 — Magna Cum Laude, and 3.889-4.0 — Summa Cum Laude.

“Based solely on academic achievements, this is an outstanding class,” said Kapolka. “Having said that, this is one of the most civically engaged group of young women and men that I have ever had the privileged of working with. I am so proud of their accomplishments and cannot wait to see the positive impact these students will have on our community and society.”

In addition to the Chelsea Area Women’s Service Club, CHS catering staff, and National Honor Society juniors who assisted with the evening’s festivities, special thanks go to Jeff and Andrea Hollandsworth for donating student plaques, and Gretchen Steele for invitations, programs, and certificates.
