United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) is pleased to announce the opening of a new addition to its Kresge Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (Kresge Center), located on its flagship Chelsea Retirement Community campus.

UMRC is celebrating with an open house on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Everyone is invited to attend, and the Kresge Center is at 805 West Middle St.

The addition to this 34-year-old structure is Phase I of an overall plan to expand and renovate the Kresge Center. It is part of UMRC’s largest-ever construction project since its founding in 1906, thanks to the UMRC Foundation’s successful Growing to Serve comprehensive campaign.

This Kresge Center capital project will provide long-term residents and short-term rehabilitation guests with amenities such as private rooms with personal bathrooms and showers, welcoming reception and common areas, a bakery, and more.

UMRC is also adopting the Action Pact culture change model of care with a focus on person-centered attention for our residents and guests of Kresge Center, consistently rated five-star by the State of Michigan.

“We are delighted that Phase I of the Kresge Center project is completed,” says Kim Thompson, vice president of operations for UMRC, in a press release.  “Our residents and their families have been eagerly watching the construction unfold over the past year and are excited to be able to enjoy their beautiful new rooms and living spaces.”

“Renovations and additions to the Kresge Center have been carefully planned to minimize the disruption of our residents,” said Kate Collins, UMRC’s vice president of project development.  “After a final cleaning and inspection, we will begin moving residents to their homes in the newly completed wing on Feb. 6.”

Renovations to the existing Kresge Center structure will then begin in full and are planned in six phases.

Final construction of the Kresge Center is expected to be completed by May 2020.
