Human Rights Commission Hears from Jackson Human Rights Commission Speaker

By Lisa Carolin

Members of the Chelsea Human Rights Commission were inspired by Cheryl Ragland, chairperson of the Jackson Human Rights Commission, who visited the May 5 meeting via Zoom.

The Jackson HRC was established in 1963 and currently has six members with a limit of nine members. Ragland said that the Jackson HRC has issued statements supporting the Asian community as well as the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial in the murder of George Floyd. In addition, the Jackson HRC created a community policing oversight committee and works with the police chiefs of Jackson and Lansing. Jackson HRC members, with the help of a few city leaders, also wrote what they call the Fair Chance Housing Ordinance.

At the meeting, the Chelsea HRC approved a letter written by member Joanne Ladio to send to City Council for release to the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce commending its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion- statement-https://chelseamich.com/cacc-dei/

Also at the May 5 meeting, members of the Chelsea HRC reviewed the Social Media Policy approved by Chelsea City Council April 5, 2021- https://www.city-chelsea.org/Portals/0/35%20-%20Social%20Media%20Policy_1.pdf

The Chelsea HRC is requesting an extension of the registration deadline for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) virtual training session. The training will be on May 20 from 12-4 pm and up to 50 people can participate. The training is designed for anyone on the City of Chelsea staff and commissions.

The next regularly scheduled HRC meeting is on Wednesday, June 2, at 7 p.m.
