The Chelsea Kiwanis Club was pleased to provide pizza to celebrate those students at South Meadows Elementary, who raised their grades this year. Much fun was had at the end-of-school-year Ice Cream Social festivities last Friday.  Sunday’s amateur radio swap meet was interrupted by a brief downpour, but was a draw for enthusiasts from far and wide.

Our Monday meeting with the Saline Kiwanis Club was very interesting. Peter Allen has been teaching at U-M for over 30 years and has a very good idea what his students want in regard to their futures. Many newly minted graduates reject the suburban lifestyles their parents and grandparents chose. Most prized is walking/biking to work and to recreation activities, many of the millennial generation are not interested in driving at all. This has big implications for the value of homes in far flung subdivisions versus those in a community where services are close. He is very excited about plans to improve walkways connecting towns and public transit systems proposed for southeastern Michigan.

On Monday, June 13, the club will hear from Aubrey Shemwell, outgoing president of Chelsea’s Parent Teacher Organization, and Melissa Matthews-Allen, the incoming leader. They will speak about their plans for the upcoming school year and ways that Kiwanis can help. We hope to continue the successful partnership at events like Punt, Pass and Kick that was well attended last September.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy-Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
