Kresge Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center Earns Elite Five-Star Quality Rating

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Stephanie Van Koevering for the information in this story.)

United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) recently announced its Kresge Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center (Kresge Center) has received top ratings from state and national quality experts.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded a five-star quality rating to Kresge Center. This highest possible ranking puts UMRC’s facility in the top ten percent of all skilled nursing centers in the U.S.

This news comes as Trinity Health (Saint Joseph Mercy Health System) also chose to list Kresge Center as a preferred provider.

“We are extremely pleased to achieve the highest possible accolades from these arbiters of excellence,” said John Thorhauer, UMRC president and CEO. “Third-party endorsements are always a win, but when they come from organizations like CMS and Trinity Health, they indicate an extraordinary level of effectiveness. The board, staff, and partners of UMRC and Kresge Center are all celebrating these accomplishments. ”

Thorhauer said CMS offers its Five-Star Quality Rating System to help people compare and choose nursing facilities more easily. Ratings are determined after CMS thoroughly examines each facility’s health inspections, staffing, and other quality measures.

“Facilities with five stars are considered to have outstanding quality,” Thorhauer said. “While every individual and family must be careful to ask questions, visit care centers, and choose carefully among available options, CMS ratings provide a helpful starting point for narrowing down which skilled nursing facilities might be a good fit.”

Many hospitals also assign quality measures to skilled care facilities, so they can ensure strong outcomes for individuals who need an extra period of care and rehabilitation before returning home.

“We are very pleased to have the trust of our local partners as we advance our shared care objectives,” Thorhauer said.
