The upcoming holiday season means that Faith in Action wants to be sure it has enough food in its pantries to meet the needs of those in need.

“Need for non-perishable food and household and personal items remains high, and the only source for many of these items is our local donors,” says Nancy Paul, director of Faith in Action.

Jennifer Fischer, lead inventory person at Faith in Action, says there are a number of items the pantry can use now and through the holiday season.

“We need sweet potatoes, canned pumpkin, chicken broth, cream soups, stuffing, and baking supplies,” says Fischer.

“We expect to need food to fill nearly 400 more orders yet this year,” says Paul.

She says that the demand for food has leveled off in the last few years but there is still need.

“Fluctuations in the SNAP benefit programs (food stamps) can have a big effect on how much food is needed to fill in around the edges of household budgets,” she says.

Food Gatherers helps fill the need with deliveries of rescued food to Faith in Action’s Chelsea pantry at 603 South Main St. two times a week and once a week to Faith in Action’s Dexter pantry at 7931 Grand St.

Faith in Action serves the geographic areas included the Chelsea and Dexter school districts.

Paul says that anyone who wants to make a donation can find a list of most needed items here.
