C & I Dismantling of Clinton Township began preliminary site work at the Federal Screw Works factory Thursday morning.

The 80,000-square-foot plant at 500 S. Main St., closed on April 30, 2005.

It was purchased in 2007 by Magellan Properties and a year later received approval for a Brownfield clean-up plan from the county. In addition, a mixed-use project received preliminary site plan approval from Chelsea Planning Commission, but it was put on hold.

Demolition and remediation of the site is expected to be completed by the end of January.

A commercial realtor has been hired by Rene Papo of Magellan Properties to market the property.
