Should Chelsea have an Indigenous People’s Day?

By Lisa Carolin

Members of the Chelsea Human Rights Commission were in disagreement about the topic of Indigenous People’s Day taking the place of Columbus Day in the City of Chelsea during a discussion at the HRC’s Aug. 7 meeting.

It was brought up by Chelsea resident Julia Strimer, who will be invited to a future HRC meeting to further address the subject.

HRC member Joanne Ladio said that having an Indigenous People’s Day is part of a national movement to honor Native Americans. HRC members disagreed as to whether the topic would alienate some local residents.

Strimer said she brought the topic to the attention of the HRC with the hope that the HRC would make a recommendation to City Council, which she thought would have more weight than her introducing the topic to City Council herself.

Also discussed at the meeting were the presentations that HRC members continue to do about the results of its 2018 survey. On Aug. 5, members met with Mike Kapolka, principal of Chelsea High School, who reported that he found the survey results of high school students useful. They talked about high school students possibly attending HRC meetings, especially those focusing on issues that came up in the survey.

HRC members will be meeting with the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 15, and will do a presentation for the Chelsea Rotary Club on Oct. 27.

HRC member Dan Kaminsky said that he plans to attend an Ypsilanti Human Relations Commission meeting Aug.14.

The HRC meets the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers. The next meeting is Sept. 4.

  1. How about a day for the Vikings ,nomadic Asian tribes 15,000 year ago ,lief Erickeson ,Vespucci have a day for whom ever you believe deserve a day ,don’t try to re-write history . Some doesn’t need to be repeated!

  2. On behalf of the 250 members of the Chelsea Knights of Columbus, many of whom are lifelong residents who with their families, have been in Chelsea for many generations more than our new neighbors on the HRC; yes – you will be alienating many longtime residents of this community who have made this town what it is today!

  3. Nope! We don’t have German-American, Italian-American, etc, etc. November is already Native-Amercan month, or did the Chelsea Human Rights Commission miss that one in their exhaustive research? 1990- President George H. W. Bush made it so.

    Respectfully, Tom

  4. The Ann Arborfication of Chelsea continues. Why do we have a human rights Commission? Is this an issue within the chelsea city limits? Stick to stuff within the city limits.

  5. What a load of crap.
History is history. Don’t change or replace it.
If you want an “Indigenous people’s day”, make one.

  6. That’s hilarious. Chelsea needs to stop fancying itself a mini A2 and focus on REAL ISSUES HERE. LIKE NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING. SPENDING $ ON RIDICULOUS UNNECESSARY PLANTERS AND CRAP . LACK OF SHOPPING FOR ANYTHING EXCEPT FAIRY NONSENSE AND OVERPRICED USELESS KNICK KNACKS. BULLYING IN ALL THE SCHOOLS. SUICIDE. AMONG TEENS. YES I ACTUALLY USED THE WORD EVERYONE ELSE REFUSES TO.
Until this little berg starts to really look seriously at its issues, any more “days” for what or whoever isn’t gonna make a damn bit of a difference!

  7. It’s not called re&writing history. The people who ‘wrote’ history have been at best liars, profiteers and war mongers. Christopher columbus came to the conquest here by way of the Catholic Church. So yeah, time for a change in what is exceptible to allow our leaders to do. How many of the saints are child molesters. How many native women did columbus rape. Do some research eh?

  8. History shows that we have a debt to indigenous people unique to our colonization of North America. No such debt is owed to Vikings and others.

  9. There should be a real “human rights” group here made up OF ACTUAL PEOPLE NOT THE SAME LAWYERS AND MONOPOLY/BUSINESS OWNERS THAT HAVE POISONED EVERY “COMMITTEE” THAT PRETENDS TO CARE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THIS ARMPIT OF MICHIGAN

  10. What is wrong with you people who have this unhealthy hate of AnnArbor look around you the last three councils and mayor are the most responsible for the change The once proud Village of Chelsea still. Exists.
