And so it begins: M-52 roundabout road project at Werkner Road begins June 27

Werkner-Detour-for-M-52-Roundabout

Beginning Monday, June 27, Werkner Road in Sylvan Township will be closed at M-52 as the work begins on the roundabout at the corner of M-52 and Werkner Road.

Temporary traffic signals are being installed to maintain two-way traffic on a single open lane throughout construction.

Stage 1 is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 29 and the roundabout is scheduled to be complete and open to traffic by Aug. 25.

A preconstruction meeting was held on June 21 and the prime contractor is D and R Earthmoving, LLC, while Wade Trim will be administering the construction contract for the MDOT Brighton TSC.

  1. Great information! Would you be willing to post a link to larger versions of the detour route and site plan?

  2. I can’t believe they are really going to do this. So stupid. Best keep an ambulance parked right there along with a police car. I can see it now.

  3. There needs to be an alternate road for people to get
into Chelsea. Werkner is the only way to get into
the hospital, schools, etc. Someone should be working
on this. I also feel there should be no left turn into
the Professional Bldg on Main St. – they should be putting
in another drive way off of Van Buren. This is only MY
    opinion.

  4. It would have been a lot cheaper to install two more stop signs. Four-way stop. The people who make these decisions have no common sense.

  5. This is so stupid. Round abouts are one of the worst things ever invented. There needs to be an alternative route for those people that take Werkner road. This round about is going to cause so many accidents because very few people know how round abouts work. What a waste of the tax payers money.

  6. A round-about work well but only when people SLOW DOWN when
entering them. I’m in favor of placing one here as I have
been stuck on Werkner Rd. many times while trying to turn
onto M-52. The people on M-52 ignore the speed limit and
travel at 70-80 miles per hour through this intersection.
It will be much safer to make traffic slow down.

  7. M-52 is too major of a thoroughfare for a round about to be the right solution to the back up on Werkner. While I agree that people drive to fast coming into town on 52 making it hard to safely make a left going south I think this solution will only lead to accidents and a lot of frustration. Like it or not M-52 is a state road and has a considerable amount of truck, rv and boat traffic and for those folks this will be a nightmare. Round abouts are trendy, it doesn’t make them the best fit for all roads.

  8. What is wrong with the planners in Washtenaw county? They put one of these in at State and Ellsworth in AA and within 1 year it was the number 1 intersection in Michigan for accidents, having double the amount the runner up had. Terrible idea. Someone should be fired.
