Chelsea library benefits from Community Foundation grant

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Lori Coryell for the information in this story.)

During these challenging, unprecedented times of COVID-19, communities are witnessing remarkable acts of generosity and support.

Recently the Chelsea District Library was the benefactor of such a magnanimous act: an unsolicited grant of $15,000 from the Chelsea Community Foundation of the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan.

These funds are to be used for “support for unusual operating expenses related to COVID-19 response in Chelsea.

While the library building remains closed in the interest of community health and safety, its work continues. Because of these funds, the library can expand on and reimagine delivery of services that include:

Increasing the number of books, movies, TV shows, and music offered digitally.

Offering online programming experiences like weekly livestreamed storytimes and read-alouds, trivia challenges, and local history activities.

Creating virtual cultural experiences unique to the Chelsea community like Music in the Air with Jacopo Giacopuzzi.

Providing online educational classes including Alzheimer’s Association’s 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s webinar and the Art of the Memoir with Kevin Sessums.

Devising a summer reading game that allows players to engage remotely – either online or by mail.

Thanks to the generosity of the Chelsea Community Foundation, staff can do this and so much more confidently and worry free.
