Chelsea Superintendent says student count down about 54 students

Chelsea Superintendent of Schools Andy Ingall said Monday night at a Board of Education meeting that the district is down about 54 students.

“We’re losing about 18 (students) at Cassidy Lake,” a program at a local correctional facility that offers a GED program. Until this year, the Chelsea School District had a contract with the state to provide a GED program for the inmates and the loss of this contract will mean a loss of jobs for teachers as well.

“Fifty less students means a loss of about $500,000 in revenue,” he said.

Oct. 2 is the first of two official state count days for the school district, which when blended determines the per pupil state allocation.

Ingall said he was confident that the district was “appropriately staffed” in year.

He said kindergarten classes at North Creek have about 22 students.

The elementary school classrooms at North Creek and South Meadows have about 25 students each.

The middle school classes at Beach have between 26-27 students each.

The average range in the high school is in the 28-29 student range, but some classes, such as band, might have a much larger number while a class such as AP chemistry might only have 15 students.
