With two members absent, the Chelsea City Council unanimously approved all the items on its agenda Tuesday, Aug. 14.
Nelson Tree Service of Dayton, Ohio, the low bidder for a 1-year tree trimming contract was unanimously approved at a cost not to exceed $40,000.
This is the fourth year that the city has contracted these tree-trimming services, and Utilities Director Brad Roberts said that it’s “private trees” that fall on electrical lines and the city makes the tree safe but it’s up to the property owner to have them taken down.
Council Member Cheri Albertson moved the contract and Council Member Ann Feeney seconded the motion.
The City Council also approved the purchase of two pickup trucks — one for the water treatment plant employees and one for the wastewater treatment plant employees from Varsity Ford of Ann Arbor.
Both are in stock and 2012 models. One will have a plow and cost about $29,650; the second pickup is $24,400 and the city will pay a total cost of $54,030.
Council Member Rod Anderson moved the purchase and Council Member Marcia Parker seconded it.
American 1 Credit Union was granted unanimous permission to use the grass area at Timbertown on Wednesday, Aug. 15 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. for Chelsea Kids’ Fest. The event is geared to children from kindergarten through 5th grade and is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The interactive expo is expected to include 19 area businesses and organizations including the Chelsea Police Department and the Chelsea Area Fire Authority, said City Manager John Hanifan.
“This is the fourth year of this event which was a surprise to me,” Hanifan said, adding that the applicant has met all the city’s requirements to put on the event.
The event approval was moved by Feeney and seconded by Anderson and is the result of a new ordinance that requires council approval for the public use of private space in the city.
In addition, the annual West Summit Street block party was approved for Aug. 19, which means portions of the street will be blocked off from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Approval for the event was moved by Parker an seconded by Albertson.
